Factors Affecting Life Satisfaction among Wives of Retired Husbands

Abstract
This study are intended to investigate the extent of life satisfaction of wives of retired husbands and to explore factors associated with their life satisfaction after retirement of their spouse. A survey was conducted with 153 women aged 50 and over who are living in Seoul and Kyunggi provinces. Snowball sampling method was used to collect data and data were analysed by t-test, one-way ANOVA, correlation, and multiple regression methods. The major results were as follows: 1) The mean of wives¡¯ life satisfaction is 2.29 on a 3-point scale, and their life satisfaction level is shown to be good in general, 2) The life satisfaction is closely related with optimistic personality, wives¡¯ subjective health status, length of retirement, types of husbands¡¯ retirement, wives¡¯ subjective economic status, existence and nonexistence of planing for retirement, social gathering, and time spending with retired husband. The implications of social work intervention for wives¡¯ of retired husbands were suggested in several ways and suggestions for future research were provided.
